Koons Clarksville

Chevrolet GMC

You might have prepared yourself for winter setting in and plummeting Maryland temperatures, but is your car ready for the harsh weather? At Koons Clarksville Chevrolet GMC, we have everything you need to winterize your vehicle. Here, we’ll offer you some tips for making your car winter-ready. Following these steps will help keep you safe on the Clarksville roads and save you money.

Have Your Car Serviced

If your car is coming due for a service, it’s a good idea to get it done ahead of the cold weather. Schedule a service at Koons Clarksville Chevrolet GMC, and our highly qualified technicians will make sure your car is in the best possible shape for the cold winter months. Even if you don’t have a service due, you can still bring your car to us for a winter tuneup, which could pick up any potential problems before they happen.

Keep Your Car Clean and Protected

The salt covering Maryland’s wintry roads is great at keeping them ice-free, but it’s not good for your car’s paintwork. Washing and waxing your car is like giving it a winter coat that protects it from the harmful corrosive effects of salt and dirt. While it might seem like a chore at the best of times, you should wash and wax your car at least twice each month to prevent dirt and grime from building up and damaging your paintwork.

While you’re at it, use a pressure washer on the hard-to-reach parts, like the wheel arches and the underside of the car. It’s important to see and be seen in the dark winter nights, so keep all your lights and windows clean. Before every journey, make sure that all your windows are completely clear of snow and ice.

Change Your Wipers

It’s no good having a clean windshield if your wipers are worn out. You’ll be left with smeared glass and poor visibility. If you haven’t changed your wipers recently, you should replace them before the harsh weather sets in. When the temperature drops below freezing, always check that your wipers are can move freely before hitting the road. If your wipers are frozen stuck to the windshield, the blades might tear when you turn the wipers on, meaning you’ll need a new set.

Check Your Fluid Levels

It’s always important for your car’s vital fluids to be at the correct level, but even more so in the winter. Check the engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid — or have the expert technicians at Koons Clarksville Chevrolet GMC do it for you. They can also check your cooling system to make sure it’s got the right mixture of water and antifreeze to keep it working properly all winter. Don’t forget to keep your wiper fluid topped off, as that’ll help you keep your windshield clear of the winter salt and grime.

Switch to Winter Tires

Before the snow starts to fall, swap your regular tires for a set of winter tires. With their softer rubber compound and special tread pattern, winter tires stay more flexible in lower temperatures to give you better grip in icy and snowy conditions.

You also need to check your tire pressure regularly. As the temperature drops, so does your tire pressure. However, make sure you don’t overinflate your tires, as that will reduce their grip on the road. It’s a good idea to keep a portable air compressor in the trunk in case your tires need an urgent top-up.

Check the Battery

One of the worst scenarios, and sadly a common one, is trying to start your car only to find that the battery’s dead. You could find yourself stranded in the cold waiting for a tow truck to arrive. Freezing temperatures take a toll on the battery. Winter also makes the battery work much harder as you need to crank up the heat and use the lights and wipers more often. Keep your battery in good condition by making sure the connections aren’t dirty or corroded.

A battery should last around four years with normal use. But if you haven’t replaced it recently, it’s worth bringing your car to Koons Clarksville Chevrolet GMC to have our technicians check your battery’s health. If they recommend replacing it, check our service specials for a deal on a new battery.

Have Your Belts and Hoses Inspected

The winter is also tough on your car’s belts and hoses, so you should have them inspected. The belts need to be at the right tension and not cracked or damaged. Check the cooling system hoses for any signs of bulging or cracking that could mean they’re about to burst, leaving you with a serious leak.

Inspect the Cabin Air Filter

You need your HVAC system to be in tip-top condition for those cold winter days. If your vehicle’s cabin air filter is dirty, it makes the system work harder and can slow down the defogging of your windows. It will also stop filtering out dust, pollutants, and allergens in the air, and you might get a stale smell throughout your cabin. If necessary, you can get a replacement cabin air filter at Koons Clarksville Chevrolet GMC.

Carry An Emergency Kit

Even with the best preparation, something can go wrong and leave you stranded. Put together an emergency kit and keep it in the trunk, ready for that unexpected situation. As a minimum, the kit should have a flashlight, jumper cables, a tire patch kit, a portable compressor, reflective triangles or road flares, and a first-aid kit.

Keep a supply of gloves and blankets for warmth, as well as drinking water and snacks, in case you have to wait for help to arrive. Kitty litter or traction pads help give you more traction if you’re stuck on snow or ice. And don’t forget a charger for your phone, so you can stay in touch.

If you have any questions about making your car winter-ready, visit the service center at Koons Clarksville Chevrolet GMC today. Alternatively, use the convenient online form to schedule a service. We’re always ready and willing to help.

Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is a historic shipping district revitalized in the 1980s. While the city of Baltimore offers numerous tourist attractions, you could easily keep yourself busy for a weekend in the Inner Harbor alone. It boasts the National Aquarium, Maryland Science Center, Port Discovery Children’s Museum, multiple options for water cruises and taxis, live music and performance venues, diverse restaurant and shopping options, and historic ship tours. Of course, you could also take a stroll among the buildings and waterfront, soaking up the sun and sights with your friends and family.

Depending on where home is for you, getting to Baltimore might require a bit of a drive. Make sure you’re set up in a set of reliable wheels by visiting Koons Clarksville Chevrolet GMC. Check out their inventory of new and used cars, and get ready for a fun weekend exploring the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. We’ve put together a list of our top activities in the harbor, and we’re sure they’ll keep you busy for a fun weekend on Maryland’s coast.

Take a Stroll Through the Inner Harbor

Start your visit to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor with a visit to the Baltimore Visitors Center, located conveniently along the promenade. In addition to the recommendations we’ve made here, you can get the inside scoop from expert staff on current exhibits, activities, and entertainment. They also have maps and can provide directions to your next stop.

After your visit, head out on foot along the harbor to soak up the sights and sounds. There’s plenty to enjoy for free just by walking along the waterfront promenade while you plan your visit. Then, relax with a meal or a drink at one of the many incredible restaurants (we recommend Rusty Scupper or Miss Shirley’s Cafe) before heading to the next attraction.

Cruise Through the Harbor

If viewing the water from the shore just isn’t enough for you, consider hopping on a cruise or water taxi and seeing Baltimore from the water itself. Baltimore Water Taxi offers many tours, from their Brews Cruise or BYO Cruise to Bite of Baltimore to customized private charters and even dog-friendly experiences. Or join a sightseeing tour with Watermark Journey, such as their classic Baltimore Harbor Cruise with a recorded narration to tell you all about the harbor’s history and attractions. In addition, city Cruises by Hornblower has excellent dinner cruise options with a buffet, drinks, and music included.

Meet Over 20,000 Animals at the National Aquarium

The National Aquarium in Baltimore (formerly the Baltimore Aquarium) has been ranked as one of the top three aquariums in the nation. And it’s easy to see why this famous aquarium received such an accolade as you view award-winning exhibits and learn about their unique and exotic occupants. Beyond the types of exhibits you would expect, you’ll find the Amazon River Forest, Australia: Wild Extremes, Dolphin Discovery, Maryland: Mountains to the Sea, and more.

Plan your visit: the aquarium is open every day of the week with varying hours. They schedule special shows, such as puffin feeding, shark experience, and 4D Theater films, with daily times posted on their website. You can even sign up for early access tours or behind-the-scene tours for an extra unique and exclusive experience.

Keep Entertained at Power Plant Live!

One of the biggest entertainment attractions next to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is Power Plant Live!, a premier dining and entertainment destination. There are numerous bars and restaurants to whet your whistle and give you the energy you need to enjoy a late-night out. Live music can be found at five different venues. We recommend visiting the website for Ram’s Head Live!, Baltimore’s premier music venue, to see what’s on the calendar ahead of your visit. Power Plant Live! is open to adults only in the evenings, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Explore the Maryland Science Center

The Maryland Science Center inspires scientists in visitors of all ages. By taking the questions, “how come?” and “what if?” they explore the origins of discovery and innovation. Hands-on experiences are great for young scientists. The Planetarium will have everyone enthralled as stars zoom across the sky right in front of you. The IMAX theater has regular shows that are larger than life. There’s truly something to entertain every family member at this museum. There’s also a science shop so that you can buy a unique souvenir from your visit to Baltimore.

Take the Kids to the Port Discovery Children’s Museum

For more family-friendly activities, head to the Port Discovery Children’s Museum. This museum is ranked as one of the top five children’s museums in the United States and will certainly keep your family entertained for hours. Kids and parents alike can try their hand at animation, learn about ships and harbors, practice performing arts, climb on the SkyClimber exhibit, and much more. Because of this venue’s popularity, we recommend that you book tickets in advance.

Tour Historic Ships

Docked within the Baltimore Inner Harbor, you’ll find historic ships dating back to the 1800s. Many of these offer special tours and visiting hours for people with an affinity for maritime history. For example, you can explore the gun deck and captain’s cabin of the USS Constellation or the torpedo room of the USS Submarine Torsk. Crew members can answer any questions and provide interesting facts to visitors. The harbor also has a lighthouse from 1856, which is definitely worth visiting.

Enjoy Your Weekend Visit to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor

Whether you’re a Baltimore native looking to experience something new, or you’re heading to Charm City for the first time, we hope this list has inspired you. There are plenty of activities to keep you entertained for a weekend, or more, right here in the Baltimore Inner Harbor. So let us know if we missed your favorite museum, venue, or activity.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax is a compact SUV with a lot to offer. Between its spacious interior, comfortable ride, powerful performance and advanced safety and entertainment features, there’s something for everyone to love about this SUV.

If you’re interested in the 2022 Chevrolet Trax, you have an important decision to make. The Trax comes in several different trim options, each with its own available features and costs. Much of the Trax remains the same between each trim level. For example, each comes with a powerful 155-horsepower engine and a six-speed transmission. However, the differences between the two are significant enough that you should learn the difference before shopping. Below, we’ll outline the different 2022 Chevrolet Trax trim levels, including their features and costs.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax LS

MSRP: $21,400

Details: The base model of the 2022 Chevrolet Trax is the LS trim. Some of the features that come standard with this trim include a rearview camera, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment center, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capabilities, cloth upholstery, satellite radio, keyless entry and a six-speaker audio system.

Chevrolet Trax LS Additional Packages

With the LS trim, there are two additional packages, or upgrades, you can add to the vehicle. The first is the Tint and Cruise package, which adds cruise control to the vehicle. It also tints the windows for added privacy. This package costs an additional $495.

The other upgrade you can get is a remote starter. This allows you to start your vehicle from a distance with the push of a button. This is a great feature to have when the weather is extra hot or cold, as you can allow the interior temperature of the car to adjust before getting inside. Adding a remote starter to your Chevrolet Trax costs an additional $300.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax LT

MSRP: $23,200

Details: The other trim available for the 2022 Chevrolet Trax is the LT. This trim comes with all of the base features of the LS trim, along with some other standard features. Some standard features in this model include a deluxe cloth interior, synthetic leather upholstery and heated outside mirrors. In addition, a remote starter and cruise control both come standard with this trim, rather than as additional packages.

Chevrolet Trax LT Additional Packages

One of the advantages of upgrading to the LT trim is that more additional packages become available. Some of the additional upgrades you can add to the LT trim include:

The Driver Confidence Package

The Driver Confidence Package includes features designed to keep drivers safe while they’re on the road. Features in this package include a rear cross-traffic alert system, rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring. This helps drivers become more aware of their surroundings, preventing accidents while driving or parking. The Driver Confidence Package costs an additional $495.

The Premium Seat Package

For a more comfortable and stylish interior, consider upgrading to the Premium Seat Package. This package adds both heated front seats and synthetic leather upholstery. The synthetic leather adds an element of style and comfort to all your drives, and when you get into your car on a cold morning, you’ll be glad you upgraded to the heated seats. This package costs an additional $650.

The LT Convenience Package

Finally, there’s the LT Convenience Package. This basic package adds a power-adjustable driver’s seat that makes it easier to find a comfortable position while you’re driving and ensures you’re in the best possible position for driving long-term. This package costs an additional $450.

All Wheel Drive

The Chevrolet Trax comes standard with front-wheel drive for both the LS and LT trim levels. However, you can upgrade each model to all-wheel drive if you desire, regardless of the other packages you choose. Upgrading to all-wheel drive costs an additional $620. If you want more control over your vehicle in bad weather or on rougher road surfaces, then you should strongly consider upgrading either trim level to all-wheel drive.

Which Is Right for You?

The great thing about the 2022 Chevrolet Trax is that there are so many options available. Rather than including every feature by default, and thereby raising the standard price, consumers have the option to pay for the features they want. So, if there are certain features you don’t want, you are not forced to pay for them since they are not included automatically.

To decide which trim level and packages are best for you, you’ll want to think about which features mean the most to you. For example, if you’re someone who is shopping for a family vehicle, you may want something that comes with extra safety features, in which case you might want the 2022 Chevrolet Trax LT with the Driver Confidence Package.

On the other hand, if you’re just looking for something without a lot of frills at an affordable price, you might consider the 2022 Chevrolet Trax LS without any of the additional packages. It all comes down to what you’re looking for in your next vehicle and your personal budget.

One of the best things about buying a Chevrolet or GMC vehicle, is having access to OnStar. OnStar is a premium service exclusive to these brands that provides drivers with additional safety and convenience features. If you’ve never used OnStar before, you may have some questions about how it works. Below, we’ll answer some of the most frequently asked questions about OnStar to help you better understand all the benefits it provides and how you can get it.

What Does OnStar Include?

Onstar can include a number of services, depending on what pricing plan you select. At the most premium level, you’ll get services like automatic crash response, emergency services, access to the OnStar Guardian app, crisis assistance, roadside assistance, stolen vehicle assistance, vehicle location, a remote key fob, and on-demand diagnostics.

How Much Does OnStar Cost?

There are a few different pricing levels for OnStar services. The most basic plan is the Connected Vehicle plan and this costs $24.99 per month. With this plan, you get services like vehicle location and remote personalization. The next plan is the Safety and Security plan, which costs $29.99 per month. This plan includes OnStar’s safety features, like roadside assistance and automatic crash detection but does not include the connected services found in the Connected Vehicle plan.

To combine the features of the Connected Vehicle plan and the Safety and Security plan, you’ll want the Essentials plan. This plan costs $39.99 per month and includes all of the features found in the other two plans. The last plan option is the Premium plan. This plan also includes the features found in the Essentials plan, along with built-in Alexa capabilities. Since there are different plans available, you can decide which one you want to get based on the features you desire and how much you want to pay.

Can I Get a Free Trial of OnStar?

Some vehicle purchases come with a free trial of OnStar services. This is a great way to add more features to your new vehicle and test out OnStar before deciding if you want to buy it. When you purchase a vehicle that has OnStar capabilities, be sure to ask the dealership if there is any sort of free trial included or reduced cost.

Is OnStar Being Discontinued?

As of now, there are no plans to completely stop OnStar services. However, there may be some changes coming to how OnStar operates. For example, OnStar plans to phase out some of its hands-free calling features. This should not impact many of the other services provided by OnStar. In fact, with the recent release of the OnStar Guardian App, it’s more likely that OnStar will continue to offer even more services as time goes on. If you purchase a vehicle that comes with OnStar, you can rest easy knowing that there are no plans for OnStar to discontinue service in the near future.

Is OnStar Worth It?

In our opinion, yes, OnStar is worth getting. OnStar provides some great features to your vehicle that you’ll be very glad you have when the time arrives. For example, if you get into an accident, OnStar automatically detects this and alerts emergency assistance. If your car is stolen, OnStar can track it down and return it to you. Another great use of OnStar is when your car breaks down on the side of the road, as OnStar can send roadside assistance to your location using GPS. You may not use your OnStar services every day, but when the time comes that you need it, we think you’ll be glad you got it.

What Is the OnStar Guardian App?

The OnStar Guardian app allows you to access OnStar services directly from your smartphone. With the app, you can access services like mobile crash response, roadside assistance, and emergency services. You can also create a group through the app and invite your family members to join. By doing this, everyone in your family has access to the same OnStar features, plus you can view everyone’s location through a live map and receive real-time location updates. This is a great feature for parents with young drivers.

What Smartphones Are Compatible With OnStar?

The OnStar Guardian app is compatible with all the latest Android and Apple devices. If your Android device is running Android 7.0 or later, then it should be compatible with OnStar. The same goes for Apple iOS devices running 12.0 and above.

Which Vehicles Come With OnStar?

OnStar comes with GM vehicles, manufactured from the year 2015 forward. While there are some features that are not available in every single model and trim, the majority of these vehicles have access to all OnStar services. New vehicle purchases typically come with a free trial of OnStar services. For pre-owned vehicles, you have the ability to connect your OnStar account to the existing equipment within the vehicle.

Can I Cancel My OnStar Service at Any Time?

Yes, you can cancel OnStar at any time. When you sign up for OnStar, you agree to a monthly payment. If you decide that you no longer wish to use OnStar services, you can cancel your plan and you will be able to continue using OnStar until the end of your current month.

This whimsical event — offering a lights maze and a Christmas village complete with a home featuring Mr. and Mrs. Claus — is fun for families and also makes for a memorable date night. Use the opportunity to begin some of your holiday shopping and walk off the Thanksgiving feast by exploring the Enchant Forest.

Festivities include Ice Skating Trail — a fun skating rink — and an artisan Christmas market carrying unique gifts for everyone, old or young. Try the flavors of the season by sipping on some mulled cider and munching on warm, crunchy shortbread.

General admission tickets for adults begin at $39. Children ages 3-17 can enter for $29, and senior citizens, military, and EMS workers receive a discount of $3 per ticket. Entry for children 2 and under is free. For information or to book for a group of over 25 people, call 833-362-6445.

The Redeye Night Market

The family-friendly Redeye Market, presented by No Kings Collective, is on November 6 and takes place at Pennsylvania Avenue NW between Third and Seventh streets. The event is inspired by the traditional night markets of East and South Asia and is intended to bolster the local economy and support small businesses. This one-night market will feature local chefs and treat visitors to local cuisines.

A variety of vendors will be participating, including Batch Roasting Co., King’s Ransom, Rice Culture, Teaism, and Sweets by Caroline. Visitors can expect live performances and a plethora of Washington, D.C., vendors selling handcrafted goods and foods. The event celebrates the unique Asian culture thriving in Washington, D.C. It also aims to unite the community by paying homage to the past, highlighting the city’s vision for the future, and supporting local artisans and chefs.

It’s ideal for young and old and a great place to take the kids for some fair food. Let them indulge in a funnel cake while the adults take part in wine tasting from some of Washington, D.C.’s local wineries. Adults receive a commemorative wine glass with entry. Also, visit local artists and purchase some handmade goods, all while enjoying some fresh fall air.

The Caledon State Park and Wine Festival is on Saturday, November 6 and Sunday, November 7 at 11617 Caledon Road in King George, Virginia. Adult general admission is $15 online in advance or $20 at the gate. The festival is free for non-tasting guests, though parking usually comes with a fee. Be sure to dress in layers in case colder breezes start up.

Appropriate car insurance is a valuable investment. While you need a certain amount of coverage to drive legally in Clarksville, Maryland, additional insurance options provide extra coverage and protection from situations that could be catastrophically expensive. Gap insurance is one such option.

What Gap Insurance Is

Image via Unsplash by goldencoastgrams

Gap insurance is a type of automobile coverage that compensates you for the difference between what you owe on your vehicle and what your vehicle is worth if it’s stolen or totaled. This insurance differs from other types of coverage because it provides for a sum above and beyond the car’s actual cash value.

Actual cash value (ACV) is what your vehicle is worth after taking mileage, age, and damage into account. To determine the ACV for your vehicle, subtract its depreciation from its replacement value. This amount is very close to the car’s trade-in value.

Insurance companies use ACV to determine whether a car is a total loss after an accident. If the cost to repair the vehicle exceeds the ACV, the company deems that vehicle totaled, and standard insurance will only compensate you for the vehicle’s value rather than the repairs.

Some states consider a car to be a total loss if the repair costs exceed a percentage of the ACV. For example, in Maryland, your car is totaled if the repair costs are just 75% of the ACV.

How Does Gap Insurance Work?

Gap Insurance covers the gap between what you owe on your vehicle and what your insurance will pay you for it. For example, say you put $2,000 down on a brand-new car and take out a $23,000 car loan to cover the rest. With a 60-month loan and a 6.6% interest rate, you’ll pay $451 a month, or $5,412 a year on your car. Over the life of the loan, you’ll actually pay $27,066 for the vehicle.

After you drive off the lot, your $25,000 car has depreciated by 10%, so it’s now worth $22,500, but you still owe $27,066. After the first year of ownership, your vehicle has depreciated 20% to a value of about $20,000, yet you owe $21,654.

If your vehicle gets stolen or totaled during this time, your standard insurance plan will only compensate you for the car’s value, potentially leaving you with thousands of dollars outstanding on your loan and no car to show for it. Gap insurance steps in and covers that amount, paying off your loan so you’re free from that debt as you look for your next vehicle.

Who Needs Gap Insurance?

Gap insurance is designed for individuals who owe more on their vehicles than they’re worth. As you can see from the example above, the instant depreciation of a new car once driven off the lot puts many drivers in that category as soon as they take their vehicles home. You should consider gap insurance if:

  • You put down less than 20% of the purchase price as your down payment.
  • Your car loan lasts for 60 months or longer.
  • You’re leasing a vehicle.
  • You’re driving a vehicle with an exceptionally high depreciation rate.
  • You drive more than 15,000 miles a year, accelerating your car’s depreciation.

If one or more of these statements applies to you, you can calculate the difference between your car’s value and what you owe on your loan to see how much value gap insurance offers in your case. Compare this with the cost of the insurance itself to see how much you might gain from this coverage.

How Can I Get Gap Insurance?

You typically need to get gap insurance within 30 days of purchasing a new vehicle. If you’re leasing your vehicle, the contract might already include gap insurance, so check the fine print to see if you’re covered.

Not all insurance providers offer gap insurance, so you might need to shop around for this special type of coverage. It’s typically best to begin by contacting your current insurance agent to find out what they can provide. If gap insurance isn’t an option, you can purchase this coverage separately or move your car insurance plan to a company that will meet all your needs.

The bank or credit union that’s financing your vehicle might also offer gap insurance. In this case, the lender usually calculates the total sum for your gap insurance and adds the cost to your auto loan. While this seems convenient, it means you’re paying interest on your gap insurance, which increases the overall price of your coverage.

When Should I Cancel My Gap Insurance?

You should cancel your gap insurance when the amount you owe on your vehicle is less than the vehicle’s ACV. Once a year, look up the trade-in value of your vehicle or have it appraised at a dealership. Then, look at your car loan and determine what you still owe on the vehicle. The difference between these two numbers will help you decide if it’s worth investing in gap insurance for another year. If the cost of the gap insurance itself exceeds what the insurance would pay out for you, it’s no longer worth the investment.

What Exclusions Apply to Gap Insurance?

Gap insurance offers helpful coverage in specific situations, but it’s important to know what it does and does not cover. Gap insurance will not help with:

  • Late loan payments.
  • Damage costs associated with a previous accident that did not total the car.
  • Insurance deductibles.
  • Financial penalties assessed on a leased vehicle for excessive use.
  • Security deposits on leased vehicles.
  • Costs associated with extended warranties or other coverage.
  • Carry-over balances from previous loans.
  • Equipment added to the vehicle after it was purchased.

If you’re leasing or purchasing a new vehicle from Koons Clarksville Chevrolet GMC, gap insurance is definitely something to think about. Calculate how much you can afford to spend each month on car expenses, including insurance, using our convenient payment calculator. Then get the right coverage for your needs, so you can drive off the lot confidently in your new vehicle.
