Maryland’s fall foliage typically starts to change color in early October and continues to present a stunning display through to mid-November. Factors such as temperature and rainfall can impact this timeline, but most years will see at least a few days of truly stunning displays from the trees. While lucky Maryland residents can enjoy much of the color in their own backyards, the autumn months are also a wonderful time to venture further and admire the sights in other parts of the state. Here are a few ideas for breathtaking road-trip destinations during the fall.

Scott’s Cove Recreational Area

Scott’s Cove provides an idyllic destination for families who want to admire the foliage from the water. Situated along the north bank of the Rocky Gorge Reservoir in Howard County, this recreational area offers easy access to the Patuxent River. You can launch from Scott’s Cove when the watershed properties are open, which is typically from the middle of March through to the end of November, giving you ample time to enjoy the changing autumn foliage.

Scott’s Cove is an excellent place to begin the Patuxent Challenge if you’re interested in adding a little more excitement to your day. To complete the challenge, you must take a selfie with one Patuxent Challenge sign in each county plus one in the City of Laurel. There are 14 challenge sites in total, only two of which are north of Scott’s Cove, so you can easily complete the challenge by heading south from here or by starting in St. Mary’s County and working your way north.

Along the river, you’ll enjoy gorgeous views of the surrounding trees, which will make you want to take selfies with more than just the challenge signs. Scott’s Cove provides a portable restroom facility for visitors, and the picnic area and playground offer plenty of added fun at the beginning or end of your trip.

Sugarloaf Mountain Recreation Area

Sugarloaf Mountain offers an excellent view of the surrounding area from an elevation of 1,282 feet, so you can take in the fall foliage from a stunning vantage point above the trees. The mountain is so well positioned that during the Civil War, the northern and southern forces both had turns using the position as a lookout. You can park about three-quarters of the way up the mountain and take one of the trails to your desired vantage point.

The Green Trail from the West View lot is one of the easier options. This quarter-mile trail features stone steps for a steadier climb. Once you reach the peak, you can take the same trail back or make a loop by following the Red Trail down to the McCormack Overlook and then turning onto the Blue Trail to return to the parking lot. For a more challenging hike, park in the East View lot and take the Orange Trail up. This trail also spans a quarter of a mile, but it covers much steeper terrain.

If you’re interested in a longer hike, you have numerous options, thanks to the many intersecting points on the trails surrounding the mountain. Consult a map of Sugarloaf Mountain before your hike so you can plan accordingly. This area features red and white oak, black gum, tulip poplar, eastern hemlock, and black birch trees, presenting a brilliant landscape of color. You may also spot some of the local wildlife, including the white-tailed deer, red fox, flying squirrel, wild turkey, and red-shouldered hawk.

Seneca Creek State Park

Seneca Creek State Park covers 6,300 acres and includes the 90-acre Clopper Lake. You’ll find over 50 miles of trails within the park where you can hike, bike, or go horseback riding amid the autumn foliage. The park provides restrooms and offers playgrounds and picnic areas where you can unwind and enjoy the scenery. A 27-hole disc golf course covers 32 acres of the park, providing a playful way to explore the area.

History buffs can enjoy sights such as the restored 19th-century one-room Seneca Schoolhouse. The partially restored Black Rock Mill is another worthwhile stop, with informative exhibits revealing the area’s history. The self-guided Woodlands trail offers interpretive features that describe the life of the Clopper family, who once owned a plantation home on the land. You can easily fill an entire day in the area, soaking up the natural beauty.

Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Scenic Byway

Running 236 miles alongside the Potomac River, the C&O Canal Scenic Byway covers a rich landscape of picturesque country roads from Washington, D.C., to Cumberland, Maryland, creating endless opportunities for scenic fall drives. We recommend joining the byway at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center in Potomac, Maryland. From here, you can drive along the byway in either direction and tailor the road trip to fit your schedule.

Though the byway has seven visitor centers dotted along its route, Great Falls Tavern is one of the most distinctive. Here, you can take a boat ride down the canal on a replica Charles F. Mercer excursion boat and travel along the locks just as families would have done in the 1870s. You can also access the Billy Goat Trail from this visitor center. The trail features three sections that offer a total of 8 miles of hiking. This is a strenuous trek that’s best suited to experienced hikers.

Make some time to explore the visitor center as well. Formerly the Crommelin House, this location was once a favorite hotel among Washington officials and congressmen. Today, you’ll find detailed displays that reveal the area’s fascinating history. Outside, you can stop at the snack bar for something to munch on before you continue your explorations.

Boo at the Zoo

Washington, D.C., is home to one of the most expansive and best-loved zoos in the nation, the Smithsonian National Zoo. Every year, it hosts the Boo at the Zoo event, a family-friendly celebration of the Halloween season. The event provides a safe and fun place for kids under the age of 12 to go trick-or-treating alongside some of their favorite critters. 

While the zoo hasn’t yet announced exact details about its 2022 event, visitors can anticipate browsing some of their favorite exhibits, decorated for Halloween. The zoo also typically offers snacks and train rides as well. If you’re looking for a spooky event that’s fun for the whole family, be sure to get your tickets as soon as they’re available.

Washington, D.C., Ghost Tour

Washington has a long history, including some dark and eerie secrets. For those looking to explore the spookier side of our nation’s capital, look no further than the Washington, D.C., Ghost Tour. This event is offered by U.S. Ghost Adventures, a national company that provides haunted tour experiences all over America and owns some of the nation’s most notorious haunted houses.

Tours take place nightly and start at the Treasury Building at the intersection of 15th Street NW and F Street NW. The tour lasts approximately an hour and covers a little over a mile, during which visitors will hear some of the darkest supernatural tales from the district’s history.

The tours are led by experienced guides with a knack for storytelling, and the tour includes eight stops at famous haunted locations, including the president’s church. You might just see the six ghosts in white cloaks that are rumored to appear when the church’s bell tolls. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, you can even book the extended tour, which includes a total of 12 stops.

Field of Screams

Field of Screams is one of Washington’s best-loved haunted attractions and has a long history of providing thrills to locals. The attraction has even gained recognition as a top Halloween destination from publications like The Washington Post and the Baltimore Sun. Located just outside of Washington in Olney, Maryland, Field of Screams is much more than just a haunted house. It’s a massive Halloween-inspired theme park with plenty of terrifying activities for you and your friends.

The centerpiece of the park is the Super Screams Haunted Trail, which is the longest outdoor haunted trail in the country. This attraction combines the Haunted Trail and the Trail of Terror, which features 13 small haunted houses. The Trail of Terror promises woods full of zombies, so get ready for a thrilling experience for your whole party. 

Aside from the trails, visitors can also visit the Slaughter Factory haunted house and participate in Halloween-themed carnival games. If you’re looking for some serious scares this Halloween, consider picking up tickets online and taking a drive out to Olney.

PumpkinPalooza

For those looking for something more family-friendly and low-key, PumpkinPalooza is a great event. Sponsored by the NoMa Business Improvement District, this annual celebration of fall held in Alethia Tanner Park. While the details of 2022’s event are still to be announced, past festivals have included a range of activities for the whole family, including a pumpkin patch where you can pick out your next jack-o’-lantern.

Previous PumpkinPaloozas have also included live entertainment, costume contents, fall-themed refreshments, and scavenger hunts. Best of all, the event is free, so be sure to stay tuned and check PumpkinPalooza’s webpage for additional details.

Día de los Muertos at the Wharf

Over the years, the traditional Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) has gained increasing recognition throughout the United States. Washington’s famous waterfront complex, the Wharf, holds an annual celebration of Día de los Muertos that’s a great way to celebrate Mexican culture and the coming of fall. This year, the street festival will take place on Oct. 24. 

Although exact details haven’t been released yet, visitors can count on musical performances, fantastic food and beverages, and holiday-themed activity. Feel free to dress up when you go and enjoy the sights, sounds, and tastes of Day of the Dead this fall. The Wharf is offering prizes for the most authentic outfits.

Clove & Cardamom

When you’re looking for fresh and authentic Indian, Italian, Asian, Greek, and Mediterranean dishes, stop by Clove & Cardamom, a restaurant where you’ll find captivating flavors and a wide selection of unique menu items. With a focus on providing visitors with fresh and healthy food, this is a great place to check out if you or your loved ones adhere to vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets. 

Their menu includes a variety of tantalizing small plates, like avocado and jalapeno fritters, paneer sizzlers, Tandoori wings, spicy crab cakes, and cauliflower bites. Luckily, Clarksville is filled with enough natural parks and trails to keep you and your loved ones busy as the leaves begin to change. Whether you’re a serious hiker or just looking to spend the day exploring outside, there are plenty of nature trails nearby to match your needs. Read on to learn more about six amazing nature trails in and around Clarksville compiled by Koons Clarksville Chevrolet GMC. 

Trolley Line #9 Trail

A 1.5-mile asphalt and boardwalk walking path, the Trolley Line #9 Trail is great for hikers of any skill level. Connecting Catonsville and Ellicott City, this trail is as convenient as it is beautiful. Explore woodlands, streams, and shady trees all around you. You can even veer slightly off the trail to check out nearby historical parks and museums. 

Since this trail used to be a trolley line connecting its major beginning and end points, you can easily immerse yourself in a feeling of days past as you stroll along. If you look carefully, you’ll even see brick and stone buildings that used to house the mills and factories that allowed these Maryland towns to run. Plan to stop and explore the charming cities waiting for you at either end, including modern restaurants, coffee shops, and stores. If you’d like to fill a day with history, nature, and relaxation, this is a great trail.

Patapsco Valley State Park

Extending along 32 miles of the Patapsco River, Patapsco Valley State Park is an amazing place to spend a September day. Besides camping areas, fishing spots, and scenic picnic destinations, this park is also filled to the brim with trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. This evens out to about 200 miles of trails total, with about 70 miles maintained by the park. If you’d like a peaceful hike, you can explore hiker-only trails or elect the more heavily trafficked multi-use options.

Trails range in difficulty from easy to moderate. The popular Cascade Falls Loop Trail, for example, is a 2.3-mile option that gains 318 feet in elevation and offers you spectacular views of the park’s cascading waterfall. There are also shorter paths that lead you to the falls and back. Other hiking highlights include gorgeous wooded areas, streams, and wildlife. Explore this stunning park and all it has to offer today.

Robinson Nature Center

Robinson Nature Center is a great place to let your love of nature grow this season. You and your loved ones can explore a nature center that includes a discovery room, planetarium, gift shop, and plenty of natural exhibits and displays. There’s also a natural play area for those who’d like to enjoy some time in nature without venturing too far from civilization.

This nature preserve includes a collection of trails surrounding the property. Explore a popular, 1.1-mile Nature Center loop trail that quickly covers some of the park’s most beautiful scenery. Before planning your visit, keep in mind that this park abides by the nature center’s hours, meaning that it’s closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and requires a $5 admission price for adults and a $3 price for children over 3 years of age. This fee will be more than worth it, though, to explore some well-kept and serene natural woodland right near your backyard.

Middle Patuxent Environmental Area and Foundation

A “forever protected” oasis, the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area and Foundation is the largest park in Howard County. As a protected area, this is a great place to see the local wildlife, including 150 species of birds, 40 species of mammals, and various other reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, and plants. You’re sure to share your nature time with some animal friends in this spot.

To get up close and personal with these wild residents, explore the park’s 5.5 miles of trails that meander through wood and stream land. A 2.4-mile Wildlife Loop Trail covers the park’s best offerings, and can even be combined with the 2.3-mile Southwind Trail for a magical day of easy but engaging hiking. If you want to feel good about enjoying natural land without the worry of encroachment from the outside world, you may like a quiet walk in this park.

Savage Park

Part park and part hiking destination, you’ll find yourself coming back to Savage Park again and again. There are recreational areas like baseball diamonds and basketball courts, a playground, and bathrooms to help you feel like you haven’t strayed too far from the beaten path. Simply make a day of sitting out in nature with friends, or resolve to do a bit more walking while the weather’s good. 

Go further into this land, and you can explore 2.8 miles of interconnecting trails, some that even link to the external Patuxent Branch Trail and Lake Elkhorn. The park’s very own Savage Loop Trail offers terrain for hikers of all skill levels, but you can easily connect it to other trails to make a more challenging day of it. Enjoy streams, woods, and plenty of wildlife in this local park.

WB&A Trail

Although still a work in progress, the WB&A Trail is already a destination for walking enthusiasts. This paved trail runs from Odenton to the Patuxent River by way of the abandoned Washington, Baltimore, and Annapolis Railroad. While certain parts are still under construction, the plan is for a 5.7-mile option that’s mostly flat but connects communities and trail networks. Open to walkers, hikers, bikers, and runners, this is a community gathering trail that’s only getting bigger. Come and explore the completed parts of this trail today to say that you got in on the ground floor of something amazing.

Engine and Performance

Although there aren’t any noticeable changes to the powertrain options for the 2023 Silverado 1500, you won’t be disappointed with what you find under the hood. Because let’s face it, when something works, there’s no reason to change it. The most basic powertrain is still a powerful option, with a 2.7-liter turbo high-output engine delivering an outstanding 310 horsepower and an impressive 430 lb-ft of on-demand torque. This top-of-the-line engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission for a smooth driving experience.

Next in the engine lineup is the 5.3-liter V-8 that comes standard on some trims and is an available option on others. Paired with an eight- or 10-speed automatic transmission, this option puts out 355 horsepower and up to 383 lb-ft of torque. You can also get the 6.2-liter V-8 engine if you want your Silverado to generate 420 horsepower and a maximum of 460 lb-ft of torque. This engine works with a 10-speed transmission to provide a comfortable ride.

Last but certainly not least is the diesel engine option. This one is a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo engine capable of producing 277 horsepower and a whopping 460 lb-ft of torque to ensure you can do the job at hand easily. With this engine, your truck can tow up to 13,300 pounds, making it perfect for just about any task.

Exterior Features

While the Limited trim isn’t expected to be in the Silverado lineup for 2023, you might be excited to learn that a new trim level introduced in 2022 will find its way into the offerings of the 2023 model year. A racing-inspired truck, the ZR2 trim level features some slick styling that’s sure to catch your eye. It’s off-road capable and has two tow hooks in the lower fascia that help give it a formidable appearance. To help it stand out from the other trims, the ZR2 features a special grille with a functional flow tie.

You’ll have a few new exterior paint color options to choose from this year as well. These include:

• Radiant Red Tintcoat.
• Sterling Gray Metallic.
• Harvest Bronze Metallic.

Protect your Silverado’s paint job with an optional protective film for the front end, where your truck will most likely receive the brunt of its wear and tear.

Cab sizes and truck bed lengths vary depending on the trim level, but you have various options to ensure you get all the space you need to bring the people and gear you want along for the ride. You’ll have LED lighting in the truck bed to help you see what’s there even in the dark. This feature is standard in all but the base trim, where it is offered as an upgrade.

The corner step on the rear bumper is a handy detail that lets you access the truck bed easily. If you opt for the top-level trim, you get retractable steps that provide even easier access to the truck bed. Wheel sizes range from 17 to 22 inches, so you’re sure to get the ones that meet your needs.

Interior Features

Technology advancements that can improve your drive when you’re behind the wheel of the 2023 Silverado are plentiful. Many carry over from the 2022 model, but some new additions include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities in the upper trims and standard Wi-Fi access for all but the base trim level. Not to worry, though, as you will still be able to use your cord to take advantage of the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the lower trims.

You should go with the ZR2 trim if you want to access your favorite apps and other important information on the biggest touch screen available. This model offers an easy-to-read 13.4-inch color touch screen. It also has a configurable 12.3-inch digital cluster display that lets you see your driving speed, fuel level, and more with a quick glance. Available leather seating and leather-wrapped steering wheel make for a sophisticated look for this rugged pickup.

Safety Technology

Keeping you and your passengers safe in the 2023 Silverado are many of the same trusted features offered on the 2022 model. One newly introduced addition to safety technology is Super Cruise, a feature you can get if you choose the highest trim level. This is a hands-free and foot-free self-driving system that works on 200,000 miles of road within North America. With this system, you can simply sit back and enjoy the drive, although paying attention to the road ahead is always a good idea.

Some of the safety features that can help make towing a breeze in the 2023 Chevy Silverado are:

• Trailer side blind zone alert.
• Trailer sway control.
• Hill-start assist.
• Trailer tire pressure monitoring.
• Trailer app.
• Auto grade braking.

You’ll also have eight available cameras that provide 14 different views so that you can see just about every angle from the seat of your pickup. Overview

The newest Chevy Silverado comes with some significant updates without abandoning the classic styling and features that Silverado enthusiasts have come to love. This year’s Silverado brings you robust engine options, a flashy cabin, a new self-driving feature, and an impressive towing capacity of up to 13,000 pounds.

On the other hand, this year’s GMC Sierra comes with an upscale twist on the features and options of its predecessor. This truck is available as a single, double, or four-door crew cab with beds of different lengths. Some of the new features include several engine options, an impressive 13.4-inch  touch screen, and a towing capacity of 13,200 pounds.

Pricing Options

The 2022 Chevy Silverado has a base MSRP of $34,600, which works wonders for work duties and folks on a budget. However, if you’d like to truly experience what the Silverado has to offer, we recommend purchasing the LT model and configuring it with the crew cab and standard-length bed as well as the 5.3-liter V-8 engine.

The 2022 GMC Sierra starts at an MSRP of $35,400. We recommend going for the Sierra Elevation trim level, which comes with a fancy design at an affordable price. Regarding cab configurations and bed lengths, we suggest you choose the ones that fit your needs.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Chevy Silverado comes with a wide range of engines, including a turbocharged four-cylinder, two eight-cylinder engines, and a Duramax diesel 3.0-liter inline-six. Out of the two V-8s, the 420-hp 6.2 liter is the quickest, while the turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder boasts 240 pound-feet of torque. Despite its size, the 2022 Silverado feels like a typical car when you’re inside, especially when driving.

Meanwhile, the Sierra comes with four engines, two different transmissions, and both rear- and all-wheel drive. The base model has a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder boasting 310 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Thanks to its responsive steering and restrained body roll, it drives remarkably well.

Fuel Economy 

A Silverado isn’t the kind of truck that’ll save you money at the fuel pump; however, some of its powertrain options are more efficient than others. For example, the optional diesel at 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway is the most economical, closely followed by the gas-fed turbo-four with all-wheel drive at 20 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.

The Sierra’s fuel economy ratings vary due to its different powertrain combinations. The diesel engine at 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway is also the most economical option. However, most Sierras come with the 6.2-liter V-8 at 16 mpg city and 20 mpg highway.

Interior 

The base model of the 2022 Chevy Silverado comes with the basics, including manual locks and windows, vinyl seats, and manually adjustable front seats. Superior models, like the LT trim, offer a fancier dashboard design and an impressive center touch screen. The 2022 Sierra truck boasts many well-thought-out features, including easy-to-reach controls and a 12.3-inch digital panel. Upper trim levels come with fancier features, including a power-adjustable steering column and a heads-up display. If you decide to pay for the Denali Ultimate trim, you’ll unlock a new level of luxury with leather-covered surfaces, massage functions, and 16-way power adjustments.

Connectivity and Infotainment 

Every Chevy Silverado comes with a touch screen infotainment system that supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a mobile hotspot enhanced by a responsive system and buttons. The LT trim level, and higher, comes with a horizontal 13.4-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Google-powered voice assistant, and an alternative Amazon Alexa integration.

All Sierras use an impressive 3.4-inch touch screen to run the infotainment system, where users have wireless access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also, the built-in Google software lets users access the app store, voice assistant, and maps. This truck also features a 12-speaker Bose audio system, additional power points, and wireless phone charging.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The Chevy Silverado is a solid hauler with a max towing capacity of 13,300 pounds for the diesel engine and the 6.3-liter V-8. The 5.3-liter version, on the other hand, can handle up to 11,500 pounds. The turbocharged four-cylinder model can tow as much as 9,500 pounds. The truck’s payload ranges from 1,870 to 2,280.

Standard GMC Sierras can handle up to 13,200 pounds. At the same time, the 5.4L EcoTec 3 V-8, the turbocharged 2.7L L3B, and the 6.2L EcoTec V-8 can tow up to 9,900, 9,3000, and 8,900 pounds, respectively. The average payload capacity varies from 2,240 to 5,380 pounds.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage 

Chevy offers a competitive warranty for this half-ton truck. Their guarantee includes one complimentary scheduled maintenance visit. Plus, a limited warranty with coverage of three years or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first) and a powertrain warranty that covers the first five years or 60,000 miles.
